The Verona Arena
It is one of the most famous monuments in the world.
It is one of the most famous monuments in the world. As an amphitheatre, it is only second to the Colosseum in Rome. Besides being the undisputed symbol of the city and a key monument of an era and a civilization, it is also the Scaliger city’s open air theatre. It hosts events and concerts and the Opera Festival, with shows attracting visitors from all over Italy and abroad.
Not bad if you think it was originally meant for over 30 thousand people to watch the hunting down of fierce and exotic animals and gladiator fights! Unfortunately, of the majestic outside ring, only the so-called “wing” remains. It may seem incredible, but over the centuries the Arena was even used as quarry, from where to take material for other buildings!
It can be visited every day of the week, from 8.30 a.m. to 7.30 p.m. (but be careful, the ticket office closes at 6.30 p.m.) except Mondays, when visits are allowed from 1.30 p.m. to 7.30 p.m.
