The previous one was originally from the 13th century and was of considerable size, serving as a supplement to the small Pieve San Martino, which was located within the walls, convenient and safe for the population but was destroyed in 1528 by the Landsknechts of Charles V. Since then, the parish church of San Zeno became the parish and took the name of San Zeno and San Martino. At the end of the eighteenth century, Luigi Trezza designed the expansion in neoclassical style, but the works were soon interrupted by the arrival of Napoleon's revolutionary troops. Work resumed in 1821, with the construction of the presbytery, apse, and bell tower, and progressed also thanks to the great participation of the people who gathered stones from nearby quarries. It was completed in 1884 and consecrated by Luigi di Canossa in 1888.
