“Mourning over the Dead Christ” is a suggestive sculptural group dating back to the 14th century made of organogenic limestone, originally polychrome.
The work of art represents Christ in a shroud moments before being placed in his tomb surrounded by six life-size mourners on three sides.
The statues, showcasing a strong pathos and expressionistic traits capable of engaging intense emotional involvement, is attributed to the “Master of Santa Anastasia”, later identified as Rigino di Enrico and chronologically placed in the first half of the fourteenth century.
