The present building was erected on the remains of an earlier early medieval building.
Even of the later Romanesque building, dating back to the early 12th century, few elements remain, such as the gabled façade and the bell tower, having been heavily modified over the centuries and in particular between 1853 and 1854. Another interesting architectural element from the construction is the apse decorated with pilasters.
The façade is adorned by a prothyrum above a 16th-century portal. Also on the façade, above the central lancet window, are three marble slabs from a presbytery enclosure dating back to the 18th-9th century. Other fragments from that period are walled up on the north side.
