Monument to the Martyrs of Castelnuovo

A place of remembrance dedicated to the fallen of Castelnuovo del Garda

The Monument to the Martyrs of Castelnuovo, inaugurated in 2008 on the occasion of the 160th anniversary of the massacre of April 11, 1848, is dedicated to the victims of the massacre that affected the population of Castelnuovo del Garda during the First Italian War of Independence. Designed by architect Paolo Zoppi and created by sculptor Veronica Fonzo, the monument combines historical and symbolic value.

The work consists of two slabs of white Carrara marble representing the innocent victims, wrapped in a fan of Cor-Ten steel that culminates with an eagle, a metaphor for the enemy and at the same time a reference to the Habsburg coat of arms. The feathers of the eagle transform into bayonets and rifles, evoking the violence of Austrian repression and keeping alive the memory of one of the most dramatic events in the history of the territory.
