An elegant neoclassical church that holds the history, art, and faith of Castelnuovo del Garda
The Parish Church of Santa Maria Nascente is the main place of worship in Castelnuovo del Garda and represents one of the historical symbols of the town. Until the 15th century, the community referred to the ancient Romanesque church of Santa Maria, now a chapel, while the current building was designed in the early 19th century by architect Luigi Trezza to meet the population growth.
In neoclassical style, the church stands out for its elegant façade and spacious single-nave interior, dominated by a striking octagonal-based dome. The presbytery holds the decoration of the Marriage of Mary, created by the Veronese painter Paolo Giovanni Pellesina, while among the works of art, the altarpiece of the Madonna in Glory with Saint Anthony, Saint Catherine, and Saint Lucy, attributed to Felice Brusasorzi, stands out.
The church still bears the marks of history: during the First War of Independence, in 1848, it was severely damaged by Austrian bombardments and subsequently restored thanks to the contribution of the community and the Diocese of Verona. Next to the building rises the historic Romanesque bell tower of the ancient church of Santa Maria, now a precious testimony of the medieval origins of the village.
