Guided Tour of the Historic Ambrosini Pharmacy — Caprino Veronese
The Ambrosini Pharmacy, also known as Antica Farmacia Ambrosini dal 1766, is a historic shop located in Piazza Roma 18, Caprino Veronese (Verona, Italy), in operation since 1766.
During the guided tour, visitors can admire:
the original furnishings (counters, shelves, and display cabinets), likely made of fine wood, reflecting the classical 18th-century apothecary style;
a 1700s fresco, a decorative painting that showcases the artistic flair of the time;
Ancient and curious objects that bring the memory of the old pharmacy-apothecary back to life, such as powder jars (including mummy powder), enemas, preparations like theriac, vintage microscopes, alembics, handcrafted laboratory tools, mortars & pestles, blown-glass bottles and vials with antique labels, and — last but not least — two bezoars, rare natural antidotes also mentioned in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.
As a certified historic pharmacy, Ambrosini is not only a place of care, but also a living archive of ancient furnishings, medical knowledge, and pharmaceutical practices. It offers a rare opportunity to step back in time and explore the world of herbalists, remedies, and early science.
As a testament to this important cultural heritage, the pharmacy has recently published a commemorative book celebrating its 250 years of activity. The book tells not only the story of the Ambrosini family and the pharmacy itself, but also traces the broader evolution of pharmacy throughout history, making the visit an even richer and more engaging experience.
