The Cascina Benati, located in the area of Oliosi, is one of the symbolic places of the Battle of Custoza on June 24, 1866. Here, during the clashes between the Italian army and the Austrian army, a group of soldiers from the 44th Regiment of the Forlì Brigade barricaded themselves inside the building, holding out for over an hour before surrendering.
Right within the walls of the farmhouse, one of the most famous episodes of the battle took place: to prevent the regiment's flag from falling into enemy hands, Captain Camillo Baroncelli ordered it to be divided into several parts, which were hidden and later reassembled at the end of the conflict. This gesture contributed to making the Cascina Benati a symbolic place of Risorgimento memory.
Reconstructed after the war damage, the farmhouse was recognized in 1907 by a commission of the Royal Army as "the glorious house", fully entering the history of the Battle of Custoza and the territory of Castelnuovo del Garda.
The building is privately owned and is not open for internal visits, but can be observed from the outside.
