In the heart of Lazise, just a few steps from the harbor and along the passage leading to the lake, the Monument to the Fallen stands as both a solemn and harmonious presence, perfectly integrated into the landscape, where the beauty of the lake meets memory.
The work, erected in 1924, develops from a base of limestone rocks that evoke a rugged and natural terrain, symbolizing the hardships faced in war. On this foundation rises a slender and elegant stone obelisk from Nembro, decorated with two horizontal bands: the lower one carved with the town's coat of arms and the upper one adorned with a star. The top is enriched with vegetal motifs and small polygonal recesses and today supports a lamp, while originally it featured a lighthouse, emphasizing the values of guidance and memory.
The monument, standing just over four meters tall, is enhanced by several sculptural and symbolic elements. Prominently displayed on the front is the figure of a soldier, sculpted in the act of supporting a winged Victory in bronze, an image of sacrifice and aspiration for peace. The marble plaques bear the names of the fallen and commemorative inscriptions of World War I, while an additional plaque also honors the victims of the second world war. Some engraved phrases recall the proclamations of General Armando Diaz, reinforcing the connection to national memory.
