San Zeno Gate is the main entrance to the town of Lazise, located on the eastern side of the walls. In ancient times, it represented the only functioning access gate; indeed, to control entry into the town, there was a guard post where today stands the capital with the Madonna. Outside the gate, there was also a complex defensive system: the passage of the moat was indeed protected by a barbican, an additional bridge that spanned the ditch to protect the walls. This element served as a second defense, in addition to the castle walls, to slow down and make potential attackers more vulnerable. Observing the gate from the outside, one also notes, in addition to the name of the town, that the tower appears shorter compared to the rest of the walls.
