They call it the "botanical garden of Europe" and rightly so. Mount Baldo - whose slopes rise from the mild shores of Lake Garda - has an exceptionally rich and varied flora, ranging from the typical Mediterranean vegetation of vines, olive trees, and oleanders to the alpine stars of the higher altitudes.
The Botanical Garden is located in Novezzina (in the municipality of Ferrara di Monte Baldo) at over 1,200 meters above sea level and is a reflection of the stunning richness of Mount Baldo. What sets it apart from traditional alpine botanical gardens is that only native species are collected here: over 700 are already planted, but the number is continuously growing. Anemone of Baldo, Aquilegia, Asphodel, Bellflower, Daphne, Martagon Lily, Lily of the Valley, Nigritella, Bear's Ear, Pulsatilla, Christmas Rose, Madonna's Slipper, Edelweiss... these are just some of the rare flowers that - especially in spring - make it a riot of colors and fragrances.
There are about twenty floral species that are typical or exclusive to Mount Baldo, which therefore bear the epithet "baldensis," as they were first recognized here: further evidence of the naturalistic importance of this area.
